What types of brain injuries are there?

Brain injuries vary widely depending upon the type of force and the amount of force that impacts the head. The type of brain injury can affect just one functional area of the brain, or it may affect various areas or in worst case scenarios, it may affect all areas of the brain.

The common types of brain injuries are as follows:

  • Concussion: Concussions can be caused by direct blows to the head, force from whiplash, gunshot wounds, or from violent shaking of the head. Closed and open head injuries can cause a concussion, and they may or may not result in a loss of consciousness. While some concussions are mild, serious concussions can lead to blood clots and they can be fatal.

  • Contusion: A contusion is a bruise or bleeding on the brain and is often the result of a direct impact on the head. Large contusions require surgical removal.

  • Croup-Contrecoup: This is a type of contusion that occurs at the site of impact and on the opposite side of the brain. In such cases, the force of the impact is so great that it causes a contusion at the site of impact and it causes the brain to slam into the opposite side of the skull, resulting in a second contusion.

  • Penetration: Penetrating injuries occur when an object such as a knife, bullet, or other sharp object pierces the skull and forces hair, skin, and bone fragments to enter the brain.

  • Diffuse Axonal: This type of injury is commonly caused by a strong shaking or rotation of the head as in Shaken Baby Syndrome, or by rotational forces in an auto accident. Injury is sustained when the unmoving brain lags behind the skull's movements, causing brain structure and nerve tissues to tear.
