What is a brain injury?

Brain injury refers to forms of acquired injury and damage that result from induced trauma. This can happen when your head suddenly hits a hard object, or when an object pierces your skull and enters the brain tissue. Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is sometimes used interchangeably with brain injury, but this could also refer to brain damage that is much more severe in nature.

What are the symptoms of a brain injury?

As an area of personal injury law, brain trauma involves injuries that you suffer because of another person’s careless or reckless behavior. This is known as negligence—the person or party failed to uphold their rightful duties. When individuals suffer injury because of another person’s negligence, the negligent party may be held responsible for the injured victim’s recovery.

Even a mild brain injury can create a host of symptoms, including: Brain X-Ray

  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Blurred Vision
  • Confusion
  • Behavioral or Mood Changes
  • Memory Problems
  • Concentration Problems
  • Nausea or Vomiting
  • Convulsions or Seizures

A person who sustained a moderate brain injury may experience an intense headache, repeated nausea or vomiting, an inability to waken from sleep, seizures, slurred speech, numbness in the extremities, increased confusion, loss of coordination, and agitation. It's important to know what to do if you have a brain injury, because you may be able to save your life or someone else's.

Causes of Brain Injuries

Brain injuries are extremely common in car accidents, truck accidents, and construction accidents, especially in those involving falls. If you are ever injured in an accident and show signs of moderate or severe TBI, you should seek medical attention right away. The medical team will be primarily concerned with ensuring proper oxygen supply to the brain and the rest of the body, maintaining blood flow, and controlling blood pressure.

Sadly, more serious head injuries can result in the following:

  • Cognitive problems with memory and reasoning
  • Behavioral and mental health problems
  • Personality changes, including aggression and depression
  • Coma, or a persistent vegetative state
