Spinal Cord Injury

The spinal cord is what controls movement throughout the human body as directed by the brain. Spinal cord injuries (SCI) therefore can be catastrophic, resulting in the loss of feeling and mobility depending on the location of the injury on the spinal column. An SCI can be caused by any trauma to the spine, commonly as a result of a car accident, construction site accident, a slip and fall, or any other injury that severely stresses the spinal column.

The experience of a person with an SCI injury depends on where the spine was impacted:

  • Injuries to the seven vertebrae in the neck, the Cervical Vertebra, can affect functioning in the arms and legs.
  • Injuries to the next twelve vertebrae, the Thoracic Vertebra, may result in loss or limited functioning in the chest and legs.
  • Lumbar vertebra are the lower and injuries to them can affect functioning in the hips and legs

SCI may also result in damage to the cushions that lay in between vertebra known as intervertebral discs--causing them to herniate or rupture. Herniated or ruptured discs can put pressure upon the nerves in the spinal column. Discs injured in such a way are usually those in the neck or in the lower back and can cause intense pain or numbness or tingling in the arms, hands, and fingers. Lower back herniation can further result in tingling in the buttocks and legs and a person's ability to sit or stand may be compromised. Another type of injury is when the natural curvature of the spine in the neck and lower back, known as cervical lordosis, is lost or deepens, muscle spasm and neck pain can result.
