Tests to Help Prevent TBI Misdiagnosis

Brain Injuries

Some cases of TBI are mistakenly diagnosed as resulting from a concussion, but post concussive syndrome is a separate diagnosis. A health care professional with extensive TBI experience will know what to look for and should be present if TBI is suspected at any point.

Unfortunately, nearly 85% of all TBI victims do not appear to be injured and often have normal CT scans and MRIs of the brain at first. Because TBI disrupts the nerve endings of cells, it can result in a cell that looks healthy but is unable to transmit and receive messages.

A test called Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI) is extremely helpful when diagnosing wiring issues in the brain and when TBI is suspected, it is important to implement neuropsychological testing right away. This testing can take eight hours and serves as a strong diagnostic tool for TBI.

How To Identify If You Have A TBI Case

If you believe that you or a loved one incurred a brain injury because of someone else's negligence, then you have the right to file a claim for compensation.

First, you need to identify the type of brain injury and its potential effect. Traumatic brain injuries range for mild to severe. The symptoms of mild TBI are as follows:

  • Loss of consciousness for less than 30 minutes
  • Mood swings
  • Memory loss or sensory loss
  • Coordination issues
  • Nausea and/or seizures
  • Difficulty formulating complete thoughts or sentences
  • Excessive depression and/or sleep

Those suffering from mild TBI will most likely regain their full health, while those with severe TBI may have permanent brain damage. Symptoms of severe traumatic brain injuries include:

  • All of the symptoms for mild TBI
  • Clear fluid that drains from the nose or ears
  • Dilated pupils
  • Confusion and difficulty with speaking

After seeing a doctor, make sure to keep all medical records associated with the injury. These will be vital during the course of your case.

Second, you will need to talk with an injury attorney to calculate the amount of damages that you may recover. You could recover compensation for loss of income, medical bills, pain and suffering, and much more. Call our firm if you have more questions!
