What is Post-Concussion Syndrome?

Question: About five days ago, I fell and hit my head on the pavement. I rushed to the emergency room immediately where they stitched up the wound and checked my pupil dilation. I was diagnosed with a mild concussion and sent home. I went back to get the stitched removed and told the doctor that I was still getting dizzy and headaches. He explained that this was normal and would persist for a few weeks, but now I’m also getting tingles and numbness in feet and hands. Should I be concerned?

Answer:

You are most likely suffering from something called Post-Concussion Syndrome.

Most people suffering from this experience dizziness, headaches, fatigue, insomnia, anxiety, memory issues and loss of concentration. While little is known about why this syndrome occurs, it typically appears a week to 10 days after the incident.

About 80 percent of patients suffering from mild to severe concussions experience post-concussion syndrome. Diagnosis and treatment for this is highly personal, and we suggest contacting your doctor as soon as possible to run a CT scan or an MRI to rule out any possible traumatic brain injury.

Traumatic brain injuries can have serious long term effects. In addition to the symptoms mentioned above you could also face:

  • Behavioral changes
  • Physical disabilities
  • Persistent headaches
  • Cognitive setbacks

Furthermore, if your slip and fall on the pavement occurred as a result of a poorly maintained parking lot, slippery store floor or negligence, you could have a personal injury claim. When your injury is the fault of a negligent party, our Boston injury lawyers can help you seek compensation for your medical care and lost wages.
